Last week, I received what seemed like a normal email from a partner organization I’ve worked with before. They asked me to sign in to a network to download a flyer. Since I was expecting something from them, I didn’t think twice about the extra step.
But the download didn’t work. After a few failed attempts, my email security flagged it. I wrote back to let the sender know the file wasn’t opening. What I didn’t know at the time was that I was no longer corresponding with the partner organization; I was emailing directly with the hacker who had taken over the account. Looking back, the reply I got, “Yes, you can download it, Santos. Try again,” should have raised red flags. But I was rushing out the door for a doctor’s appointment and decided to deal with it later.
Just as I was leaving, Kaustav, a Cybersecurity Advisor, from my IT company – TeamLogic IT – called. He told me my account had been suspended due to suspicious activity and that they needed to verify some details before restoring access.
What struck me most wasn’t just the recovery, but the speed. From the time of the phishing attempt to the IT company’s intervention, no more than 5–10 minutes had passed. That quick response likely prevented a serious breach.
But beyond the timing, what I felt most was peace of mind. Knowing that my IT company was monitoring, vigilant, and proactive gave me a sense of protection that is priceless, especially in a world where online threats and phone spoofing are daily realities.
